The
inspiration for The Ambient Deer & Horses Series came from 2 directions. I
had fallen in love with the work of Franz Marc and saw it as a means of
freeing me from the problems of the contemporary figure and how it was
causing me undue self conscious difficulties. Marc's horses seemed dramatic
and free of that restraint. And then in the early eighties I spent time
every year traveling the east coast seashore areas from New Jersey to
Florida -looking for "the perfect beach". Not for surfing -but a place where
you could camp -not in a commercial camp ground with the ocean at your
feet. Over time we found such places in Virginia, North Carolina and
Florida. And in Virginia there were horses there too!
